City of Columbus Improvements On 43 Streets To Begin In August
In Fourth and Fifth Rounds of 2010 Resurfacing

During August, the City of Columbus will begin work to improve 43 streets in the fourth and fifth rounds of street resurfacing in 2010.

“We continue to invest in the resurfacing of streets all over Columbus that are among those most in need of improvements,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “We are making streets in neighborhoods safer for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.”

The two newest rounds of road improvements total $8.886 million, bringing the City’s 2010 investments in resurfacing to $18.826 million. In 2009, Columbus had no City funds for resurfacing in the midst of the budget crisis. Last year, the City was awarded $3 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding to resurfacing nine streets, which were completed in June of this year.

“These road improvements are essential to increase the quality of life in Columbus neighborhoods,” said Councilmember Hearcel F. Craig, chair of the Public Service and Transportation committee. “This City Council and the Administration have made these projects a top priority and promise to continue to focus on road repairs in the years to come.”

The resurfacing of the 43 streets—Projects Four and Five on the attached list—will include the construction of 595 Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps. Project Four streets will be completed by November, weather permitting. With the end of construction season and start of winter weather expected in November, streets in Project Five not resurfaced this year will be completed in the spring of 2011.
