City of Columbus Identifies 17 Additional Streets For 2010 Resurfacing Work
City Council To Vote On Proposal Monday Night
On Monday, September 13, Mayor Michael B. Coleman will propose legislation that, if City Council approves, would add 17 streets to Columbus’ 2010 resurfacing project. The additional streets would bring the 2010 resurfacing project total to 112 streets.
“We continue to invest in improving streets that are among those most in need of resurfacing,” said Mayor Coleman. “These resurfacing projects make our neighborhoods safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.”
If approved by City Council, the $3 million for the 17 streets would bring the City’s 2010 investments in resurfacing to $21.826 million. In 2009, Columbus had no City funds for resurfacing in the midst of the budget crisis. Last year, the City was awarded $3 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding to resurfacing nine streets, which were completed in June of this year.
“This investment in our infrastructure is another step in the right direction,” said Hearcel F. Craig, chair of the Public Service and Transportation Committee. “As a City Council, we promise to continue to work and identify opportunities to make our neighborhoods safer places for our residents.”
The resurfacing of the 17 streets will include the construction of 245 Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps. With the end of construction season and start of winter weather expected in November, streets not resurfaced this year will be completed in the spring of 2011. The funding of the 17 additional streets through modifications of two existing 2010 resurfacing contracts will save money and time. The cost likely would increase if the streets would be sent out to bid later this year or in 2011. Streets completed this year will also reduce the City’s pothole repair and other maintenance that would occur on the streets during the upcoming winter.
The 17 streets will be added to existing contracts for Resurfacing 2010 Projects 2 and 5
